The festive acts and routes

The Moor and Christian Festivity is formed by its proclamation, the festive trilogy and some previous acts, whose timetable, itineraries and formalities will be adjusted to the traditional ones which are related next:

 1st APRIL

At 20.15 in the `Llotja de Sant Jordi´, presentation of the Festivity Magazine, after that, the poster, announcer of our Festivities, will be uncovered at the front of the Town Hall.

SUNDAY OF GLORY (APRIL)

THE GLORY. It is the public announcement of the Festivity. A participant of each `Filà´ parades. It begins at 10.00, when it finishes at about 14.00, a string of fireworks is fired at Spain Square. FORMATION. Heralds of the city on horseback, bugles, Musical Union band; Moor side with the New Music and Christian side with the Primitive band.

 

TIMETABLE AND ITINERARY. At 10.00 in the morning it begins at Spain Square and goes along Major street, then Saint Michael, Virgin Mary, Saint Michael, Saint James, Emilio Sala square, Saint George and Saint Lucia. At 11.15 it starts at Pais Valencià Avenue and goes along Saint Lawrence street, Saint Francis and Saint Matthew street. From Saint Nicholas street it starts at 12.15 and ends at Spain Square at about 14.00 hours.

`ENTRAETA DEL BERENAR´

In the evening, the `filaes´ parade with their music bands. This `entradetes´ are repeated during  the following days until 21st April.

CHILDISH GLORY SUNDAY (APRIL)

At 9.00 o´clock, Holy Mass at Saint Mary Parish Church, where the childish `Glorieros´ can receive the First Communion.                                                                                                 

CHILDISH GLORY. A parade of the festive children.                                                

 FORMATION. Similar to the Adult Glory.

TIMETABLE AND ITINERARY. At 12.00 o´clock, it begins at the `Partidor´, then it goes down Saint Nicholas street, into the Spain Square, then Saint Thomas street and it ends in front of Saint George´s church at about 13.30 hours.

APRIL

THE MOVING PROCESSION. At 20.00 processional moving of `San Jorge el Xicotet´ image, from his Temple to Saint Mary´s church, with this itinerary: Saint Thomas street, L´Escola street, Mossen Torregrossa, Saint Francis Ramon and Cajal Square, Saint Nicholas, Spain Square, Major street and Small Square of the `Fossar´, ending at Saint Mary Parish Church.

 

APRIL TO APRIL.

TRIDUO. At 20.15 hours, solemn cults to the Patron Saint at Saint Mary´s.

20st APRIL

PASO DOBLE FESTIVAL. At 19.30 hours, the music band parade from `Pais Valencià´ Avenue to Spain Square, where the Hymn of the Festivity is performed, at the end fireworks at Saint George´s bridge.

 `NIT DE L´OLLA´. Typical dinner of participants and musicians in their head locals and a posterior parade towards Spain Square.

TIMETABLE AND ITINERARY. From 21.30 to 1.00 in the morning when the parade will end. The participants will start according to their arrival from these only spots: Saint Nicholas street (Round Fountain) and `Pais Valencià´ Avenue.

TRILOGY OF THE MOOR AND CHRISTIAN FESTIVITIES

With these acts, Alcoy annually commemorates a heroic deed of the Reconquest and the special protection by `San Jorge´ in 1276. They are celebrated traditionally on 22nd, 23rd, 24th April.

22nd APRIL. THE `ENTRADAS´ DAY.

`DIANA´. After the early morning sound and Ave Maria´s office, the Castle´s Cross´s emblem will be hoisted, and the `Diana´ will start, and early joyful parade with all the participants to the sound of `Dianeros´ paso dobles.

FORMATION. The Christian side opens the parade, with the Sergeant Major and the Captain´s `Filà´. The Sergeant and the Moor side follows in the same order.

ITINERARY. It starts at the Spain Square in front of the Town Hall and goes down Major street, Saint Michael, Virgin Mary, Saint Michael, Saint James, Emilio Sala square, Saint George and Saint Lucia street. It starts again at `Pais Valencià´ Avenue, goes along Saint Lawrence, Saint Francis and Saint Matthew street. It starts again at Saint Nicholas street and ends at Spain Square.

TIMETABLE. The first `Filà´ starts at 5.45 in the morning and the last one at about 7.40 hours. Each `Filà´has two hours to do the route, keeping a 60-metre distance from the previous one.

`ENTRADA´ OF CHRISTIANS.  A parade of the champions of the Cross , image of the Romance of James I´s time, it symbolizes the Christian power concentration in defence of the ancient Villa of Alcoy. When the Christian Captain arrives at the Castle, the Governor will give him the fortress keys and join the parade.

FORMATION. The Sergeant opens the march, the kettledrummers and trumpeters go before the Christian Captain, his escort and retinue with their show (floats, small floats, etc.) groups of slaves and music bands and the rest of participants. Next, all the Christian groups with their music bands, in the same order as in The Glory but the `Filà´ that closes the parade with the Christian `Alférez´, Mossen Torregrossa, Ambassador and Standard bearer, their retinues shows, groups of slaves and the rest of participants with their music bands.

ITINERARY AND TIMETABLE. It starts at the `Partidor´ and goes down Saint Nicholas street, Spain Square (the Captain arrives at about 11.20), Saint Lawrence street, `Pais Valencià´ Avenue and Saint Lucia street, where it ends.

ENTRADA `MOORS´. Display of the Turkish Empire´s Hosts, fantasy of oriental sumptuosity , worthy of the splendor of the Caliphate, evoking the Moorish formations of the Caudillo Al-Azraq, that besieged the town.

FORMATION. The Sergeant opens the march, the kettledrummers and trumpeters go before the Moor Captain, his escort and retinue, the `Filà´ in charge with their show, groups of slaves and music bands and the rest of participants. Next all the moor groups with their music bands in the same order as in The Glory except for the `Filà´ that closes the parade with the Moor `Alférez´, Ambassador and Standard bearer, preceded by the trumpeters and followed by their escort, show, groups of slaves and the rest of participants with their music bands.

ITINERARY. The same as the `Entrada´ of Christians.

TIMETABLE. It starts in the `Partidor´, at 17.00 hours. The Captain arrives at the Spain Square at about 17.50 hours.

 

22rd APRIL. SAINT GEORGE´S DAY:

SECOND `DIANA´.  Similar to the First `Diana´, but with a special participation of children.

FORMATION, TIMETABLE AND ITINERARY. The Christian side starts at the end of Saint Nicholas street (Partidor), in this order: Captain `Filà´, Alférez ` Filà´ and the rest of the side by seniority.

The Moors will start at the end of `Pais Valencià´ Avenue, in this order: Captain `Filà´, Alférez `Filà´ and the rest of the moor side by seniority.

Both sides are alternated annually in the routes and they start the march at the same time, at 9.00 o´clock, to go towards the Spain square, and end before 11.00 o´clock.

PROCESSION OF THE RELIC. The moving of the Saint George´s Relic from his Temple to Saint Mary Parish Church.

FORMATION. Heralds, Captain and Sergeant Moor, retinue, pennants bearers and participants; next the Christian `Alférez´, Ambassador, Mossén Torregrossa, standard bearer and participants. Following the Association General Assembly with a flag and `Sant Jordiet´, Relic, Clergy and Authorities.

ITINERARY AND TIMETABLE. It starts at 11.00 o´clock in Saint George´s church and goes along Saint Thomas, L´Escola, Mossén Torregrossa, Saint Lawrence, Spain square and Major street towards Saint Mary´s Temple where it ends at about 12 o´clock.

HIGH MASS. Following, solemn Sung High Mass, with homily at Saint Mary´s church. The Mass  to `Sant Jordi´ is performed by the famous `alcoyano´ composer Amando Blanquer Ponsoda.

`MASCLETÀ´. After the mass, `mascletà´ at Spain Square at about 14.00 hours.

EVENING PARADE OF THE SMALL CARDBOARD HORSES. At 18.00 hours from the Round Fountain to Spain Square, `Realistas´ and `Berberiscos´ participants make this act.

GENERAL PROCESSION. Saint George and his Relic are taken back to his Temple. At the end, at about 21.30 hours there is a tremendous welcome to the Saint´s image with bengal lights and fireworks, then everybody can kiss Saint George´s Relic.

FORMATION. Heralds of the town devoted and participants with wax candles, trumpeters, participants and the moor side with a complete design and seniority except for the participants in charge; following the bugles, Christian side participants with a complete design and seniority except for the participants in charge, next the Moor Captain and his `Filà´, the Moor `Alférez´and his `Filà´, the Christian Captain and his `Filà´, the Christian `Alférez´and his `Filà´, Saint George´s Association Assembly with a flag and `Sant Jordiet´, Saint George´s image, the Saint´s Relic, Clergy and Authorities.

ITINERARY. It starts at `La Placeta del Carbó´, then along Major street, Spain Square, Saint Nicholas, `Ramon i Cajal´ squar, Saint Francis, Mossén Torregrossa, L´Escola street, Saint Thomas and Saint George´s Temple.

TIMETABLE. The procession starts at 19.30, and it will end at about 21.30 hours.

`RETRETA´. A festive parade with Chinese lanterns and lighted floats.

ITINERARY. It starts at 23.30 hours at Saint Nicholas street, crossroad with `El Camí´ (Round Fountain), and goes along Spain Square, Saint Thomas street and it ends in front of Saint George´s churh.

23th APRIL. `ALARDO´OR BATTLE´S DAY:

`CONTRABANDO´. At 7.15 hours at Spain Square this ancient act will be performed between the `Labradores and Andaluces´ participants.

GUERRILLAS. At 8.00 o´clock, and isolated display of participants in skirmish with arquebuses fire along different streets of the town, except in Spain Square and surroundings, which will end at 9.00 hours.

`ESTAFETA´ AND MOOR EMBASSY. At 9.45 in the morning the Christian Captain with his `Filà´ and the `Alférez´ with his, take possession of the castle with their complete garments, the last one takes up the second floor. At 10.00 o´clock, the courier-moor rider-orders the surrender of the Castle and faced with the refusal, he returns in a fast run going up Saint Nicholas street.

Next, the Moor Ambassador with his escort arrives and the Embassy is celebrated from the  square to the castle.

THE MORNING `ALARDO´.                                                                                                   FORMATIONS, TIMETABLE, ITINERARY. After finishing the parley with no effect at all, the battle of arquebuses starts. At about 11.00, the Christian Captain comes out of the Castle and along the left side of the square he goes towards Saint Nicholas as far as Saint Vincent street, after him his `Filà´ and the half of the Christian participants. At the crossroad with the `Molinar´ road, the confrontation with the Moor Captain takes place when the rest of participants arrive at the Round Fountain they will go on along `El Camí´, Saint Matthew, `Partidor´ and they will go down Saint Nicholas towards Spain Square. The Moor Captain advances, after him the half of the moor participants. The `Alférez´ comes out of the Castle at the same time as the Captain and along the right side he goes in to Saint Lawrence street, `País Valencià´ Avenue, Roger de Llúria and Bartholomew J. Gallardo street towards Mossén Josep Square (Salesians), after him his `Filà´ and the other half of the Christian participants will meet the Moor `Alférez´ and will make the Confrontation. When the rest of participants arrive at `Juan Cantó´street crossroad, they will go down this street, `País Valencià´Avenue, Saint Lawrence up to Spain Square. The Moor `Alférez´ advances, after him the other half of the moor participants who alternated the itineraries annually except for the `Filaes´ in charge.                                                                        The Christian Captain and `Alférez´ will retreat at the same time while the other participants enter the square alternately placing the Captains next to the Town Hall and the `Alfereces´ next to the Labour Catholic Club. The guerrilla line is at Spain Square. Then, the fight with cold steels begins at the square and on the castle which the moor side take. The Battle ends in front of Saint George´s church at about 13.15 hours.         

CHRISTIAN `ESTAFETA´ AND EMBASSY. At 16.30 the `Estafeta´ and Embassy are performed with the same characteristics as in the morning, but with a Christian sign.

THE AFTERNOON `ALARDO´ (BATTLE). After the embassy, there is a new arquebuse battle with the same itinerary as in the morning, but being the Moor Captain and `Alférez´ who come out of the Castle at about 17.30, with the participants who were going after them in the morning in the same order and the Christian Captain and `Alférez´ who are waiting for them at Saint Vincent street and Mossén Josep Square for the confrontation. At Spain Square the guerrillas will be carried out by the moor side going back and the Christian side moving forward, in the end the fight with cold steel takes places and also the taking of the Castle by the Christians. The firing of the participants ends in front of Saint George´s church at about 20.00 hours.

ACCOMPANIEMENT OF `SAN JORGE´ IMAGE. When the Captains and `Alféreces´ fight of both sides is ended they will go around the Spain Square to the Saint Mary´s church where the General Assembly and `San Jorge´ Association and the child `Sant Jordiet´ with his `Filà´ will join them, accompanying all together the `San Jorge´ image, `El Xicotet´, along Major street, Spain Square, Saint Thomas street to his Temple, to pray to the Saint Patron thanksgiving.

FORMATION. Moor Captain with his `Filà´ and music band; Moor `Alférez´ with his `Filà´ and music band; Christian Captain with his `Filà´ and music band; Christian `Alférez´ with his `Filà´; `San Jordiet´ with his `Filà´, General Assembly of `San Jorge´ Association; the Saint´s image and the music band of the `San Jordiet´ `Filà´.

THE APPARITION OF `SAN JORGE´. At 21.30 hours the apparition of `San Jorge´ will be performed over the battlements of the Castle, among the sound of the Festivity Hymn. With this short, emotive act, Alcoy remembers is gratitude to the Saint Patron `San Jorge´ and closes its festive trilogy.

FIREWORKS. At about 00.00 hours from the Na Valora Tower.
